Worried about your muffin top? Amy Adams has one too. That tummy? Take heart, even Gwyneth Paltrow wore two pairs of Spanx to hold everything together after the birth of her daughter, Apple.
In her new book, How to Look Hot in a Minivan, Janice Min, a mom of three and editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, argues that all mothers deserve star treatment. She shares advice for looking glamorous after baby, along with plenty of self-deprecating humor, and tips from doctors and experts in beauty, fashion and fitness.
During pregnancy, “you spend so much time concerned about the health of your child and your own maternal health, but no one really has a conversation with you about what happens to your body after you give birth,” Min told Healthland. In her book, she aims to demystify for the rest of us how celebrity moms get their bodies back to their pre-baby shape.
“Everyone thinks celebrities are using some voodoo to stay so thin,” Min says, “but they’re often doing things like ‘brush your teeth to curb your appetite,’ or going out for a walk to stop eating in the kitchen — the focal point of your whole life when you’re a mother.”
Feeling too tired to hit the gym after waking up at 6 a.m. to get your kids ready for school? Chances are, celebrity moms are feeling worse. “I love when celebrity moms are honest that they don’t feel great,” Min says. “They’re under an insane amount of pressure,” since their job is to “be thin” and they can’t take a year off to get back into shape. So, the more celebrities dish about the discomfort that all moms face, the less moms will sulk about their own figures.
Above all, the key is prevention, says Min: expectant moms should adhere to good eating and fitness habits before getting pregnant and throughout pregnancy. You can’t sit there and wonder, “OMG, why don’t I look like Heidi Klum?” after you have kids, says Min. “If you didn’t look like Heidi Klum before you gave birth, you cannot expect to look like Heidi Klum after giving birth.”
Following are nine hints from the book that we found super helpful for moms on-the-go.

Baby bags have never looked so good. Sara Blakely, a mom and owner and creator of the Spanx shapewear company, told Min: “Invest in a diaper bag that doesn’t look like a diaper bag! … It made me feel human again!” Take a cue from celebrity moms like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Katherine Heigl and Tori Spelling, who tote Amy Michelle’s faux patent leather “Sweet Pea” hobo bag, or actress Isla Fisher who sports a diaper bag by Jimeale.
